The Shapes Within
The Shapes Within, Hidden Beauty , Thy Witness.............................2017
In the practice of Focusing developed by Eugene Gendlin, you take your attention inside your body and spend time sitting at the edge between the known and unknown and you listen to what comes from that space, noticing what shape things take initially and then over time how those shapes change. In these paintings its like focusing. Things take shape but those shapes aren't fixed. Its all to do with honouring the underworld.
In the Tarot pack you have the High Priestess and she is connected to intuition and the underworld. It's about having a sense of something rather than directly knowing it in a rational way. These paintings are like a shadow world from the outside but when you are in them they are like a dream world. They are in the same landscape as the 'primordial selves' paintings.
In 'the shapes within' the two figures are moving towards each other. In all the paintings they are all inhabiting their own shape. They are really grounded and present. They are not ashamed of the shape they are. Its about owning your own shapes. We are like lava lamps, we move around so the shapes aren't fixed and at the same time we take a shape within a context. In these paintings its like two figures looking at a night sky or a landscape together. They are in their own space but they are deeply connected.
The male figures are the ones with three prongs. The female figures are more of a cow or hare shape. They are primordial like shamanic power animals. The background writings say things like respect yourself, stand firm, be yourself, bits of the alphabet and mantras all mashed into each other .... You can read the top two lines then it gets more dispersed, more dream like.
